Rickey Eugene Dunbar was born on November 13, 1954, in Dallas, Texas, and entered eternal rest on January 17, 2026, in Dallas, Texas.
Rickey was a natural entrepreneur and proudly referred to himself as a “Leatherologist,” carving out his own lane in the service industry. With his unmistakable gift of gab, quick wit, and unique charm, he had a way of turning everyday interactions into memorable experiences. Whether through conversation, craftsmanship, or simply being himself, Rickey left everlasting imprints on those who came to experience him.
He carried that same pride and confidence into every aspect of his life, including his appearance. Always well-groomed and spiffy, Rickey believed in showing up looking his best. He loved making new friends and telling jokes, and when he wasn’t doing either, he could usually be found fishing — traveling far and wide in search of the best watering holes. In true Rickey fashion, he jokingly referred to these excursions with his brothers and friends as D-Bar 3 Fishing Company, a name that perfectly captured the camaraderie, laughter, and stories shared along the way.
Rickey was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Dunbar and Elnora Dunbar (Taylor); his son, Rickey Sekou Dunbar; his brother, Steven Dunbar; and his coparent, Deborah Laws Davis.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved brother, Bruce Dunbar, his close confidant and fishing companion; his loving wife, Alfreda Lee Jones; his former wife, Ervia Jones; and coparent, Angelia Adkins; his children, Stephanie Adkins, Ervia Dunbar, Eboni Dunbar, Jason Laws, Phoebe Dunbar, and Jessica Laws; his stepchildren, Solomon Robinson, Yolanda Jackson, Kareem Jones, and Kevin Jones; his grandchildren, Caden, Ella Monet, Paislei, Jazzlon, Jaylon, and Jala; and his great-grandchildren, Jai’Lani and Rayne. He is also survived by extended family members, friends, clients, and all whose lives he touched.
Rickey’s warmth, humor, and unmistakable presence will be remembered by all who knew him. Though he may no longer be with us, the stories he created, the laughter he shared, and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of those fortunate enough to know him.
In true Rickey style, may we all keep our lines tight, our leather smooth, and our hearts open — until we meet him again at the next great watering hole.
We invite you to share your cherished memories, stories, and photos of Rickey on his memorial page (use QR code below).
